There’s something incredibly special about arranging your own wedding flowers. Whether you're after wild, romantic bouquets or joyful jam-jar posies for your tables, DIY wedding blooms are a chance to infuse your day with creativity, meaning, and sustainability.

At Wirral Flower Farm, we see more and more couples choosing to go DIY with their flowers—and we absolutely love it. If you're planning to pick and arrange your own wedding flowers, here are our top tips to make sure it all goes smoothly and stress-free.

1. Know Your Vision (but stay flexible)

Have a loose colour palette or style in mind—think “soft pastels with wild shapes” or “vibrant summer meadows”—but remember that working with seasonal, locally grown flowers means leaning into nature’s timing. The exact varieties available may vary, but that’s part of the magic.

Pro tip: Pinterest is great for inspiration, but be open to what’s blooming. You might discover a new favourite flower on the day!

2. Book Early—Especially If You Want Specific Blooms

Some flowers need to be sown a full year in advance. If you’ve got your heart set on something special (like café au lait dahlias or delicate sweet peas), book your DIY package well ahead—ideally a year in advance—so your grower can plan accordingly.

3. Don’t Do It All Yourself

You’re already doing a lot. Ask a few friends or family members to help with picking and arranging. Make a morning of it with tea, tunes, and a bit of guidance. At Wirral Flower Farm, we offer tutorials and optional workshops to help you feel confident ahead of time.

4. Think Beyond the Bouquet

Table centres, buttonholes, ceremony arches, aisle jars—DIY flowers work beautifully across the whole day. Just be realistic with what you can manage and keep arrangements simple and impactful.

5. Keep It Cool (Literally)

Flowers are like people—they don’t love being in a hot car or sitting in the sun too long. Store them in water somewhere cool and shady until the moment they’re needed. If you’re making buttonholes or bouquets the day before, a fridge (not packed with food) can work wonders.

6. Choose Flowers That Last

Some blooms are delicate and wilt quickly, while others are hardy and hold up beautifully through a long day. Ask your flower farmer which varieties are best for bouquets and arrangements. We’ll always guide you to the sturdiest stems for your season.

7. Practice Makes Perfect

Come to one of our Pick & Arrange workshops ahead of your big day to practise techniques, learn how to condition flowers, and gain confidence. Plus, you’ll leave with your own hand-tied bouquet to take home and enjoy.

8. Embrace the Imperfections

DIY blooms aren’t about perfection—they’re about personality. Your flowers will be meaningful, hand-chosen, and unique to your day. Slightly wonky? All the better. That’s the beauty of nature.

9. Plan for Picking Day

Aim to pick your flowers one or two days before the wedding to give time for arranging and conditioning. We provide the buckets and wear comfy shoes—you’ll be wandering the field, soaking up the views and the joy.

10. Enjoy the Moment

One of the best parts of DIY flowers? The memories you’ll make. From choosing each stem to tying your bouquet ribbon, it’s a grounding, creative process in the midst of wedding whirlwind. Take a deep breath. You’re doing something beautiful.
